The Old Man and the Sea
The <<the old man and the sea>>is a brief but meaningful story. After fishing nothing during the past 84 days, the old fisherman San Diego finally captured a salmon, which weight is over 1500 pounds. After a tough struggle, exactly, three days’ standoff, the old man eventually killed the big fish that came to surface because of being exhausted. However, on the way to harbor, the old man was attacked by many sharks who tracked after the smell of the dead salmon, what he still hold was only the bone of the big fish when he arrived at port.
It is said that the author, Ernest Hemingway who is a great American writer wrote the novel in only eight weeks, basing on one of his friend’s true experience. He created the figure of the old man which was later called by people “tough man” and showed his life attitude and spiritual world. The most well-known sentence of this novel and also the topic of it is that: “man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” These words become belief of many readers.
In my opinion, the whole story is about a battle between an old man and the sea, both of which are considered to have symbolic meanings according to critics. The old man once was so energetic and strong but couldn’t get harvest from the sea. He used his old body and strong mind to fight against nature and challenge his fate. He did win a bit—he got the large fish, but he lost totally because he carried back only the skeleton of
the fish with his hands bleeding. On the other hand, he had done all he could to fight against all unlucky things and didn’t lose his face. He behaved like a real man, a tough man.
It’s a tragic novel, but it’s also a heroic symphony. The poor old fisherman was regarded as a failure by other fishers as he had captured nothing during the past 84 days. When he fished that 1500-pound salmon, he determined to fight to death even though he knew clearly that the big fish was much stronger than him, and finally, he succeeded. But the ordeal was not to the end even he had succeeded in capturing the big fish. The salmon was bigger than his fishing-boat, he dad no choices but binding the fish to one side of his boat. During his way home, the dead salmon was attacked again and again by shakes followed after the smell of blood. He had to do everything he could do to protect his victory. Harpoon was taken away by a shark, he tied the knife on the oar to stick the shake; the knife was broken, he used short stick to fight against the shark; the short stick was lost, he fought with rudder···Nothing could destroy his volition though the fish was eaten by sharks. God seems to have no pity toward such a great old man; he dropped misfortunes on this poor old man time and time again. But the old San Diego never gave in. The old man’s story is not only a symbol of the relationship between human and nature, but also a symbol of the indestructible spirit of human. In reality, the old man was defeated, but in spirit, he was a winner. The
spirit of tenacious fight of him suggested the dignity and perseverance of human people. Even a great successful person has some experience of frustration. There are various reasons of being failed, but even an insignificant failure is an unbearable strike. Going to sea, he would gain another hope of being successful. Maybe, the sinister life environment and the tenacity of life attitude is the reason that this composition is more and more attractive. Life itself is a kind of endless pursuit, just like the old man’s saying“human is not born to be failure, one could be ruined, but he could not be defeated.” These words remind me of the “Destiny symphony", in which Beethoven says that “I could be destroyed, but I couldn’t be conquered”. They indicate the meaning of a hero, the meaning of life. Also, it’s what this story wants to tell people: human should face the failure bravely. From this respect, this book is not an allegory or a fairy tale, but a realistic works. What’s important in this story is not win but the value of a life. The old man dares to challenge the extremity and over the limit time and time again. What he brought to human is not only an attitude of confidence, but also a powerful strength of spirit.
The <<the old man and the sea>>gives me a lot of revelation. What is failure? Failure is the bravery to get up the courage to climb up when you fell down and to get the courage to climb up again when you fell again and never lose the hope of life and the dream of life. What is hero? Hero
is the people who dare to face the frustration, dare to challenge the frustration and defeat the frustration and overcome oneself, they have the courage to achieve their dream, even they have failed many times. I spent several months finally finishing reading this novel——Les Miserables .It’s one of the most famous novels in the French literature as well as a representative work of Victor Hugo.I closed the book and the miserable world of this novel seems to appear in front of my eyes.But the love and goodness lighted up all the book and took me to a bright world from this darkness world.
In the preface,Hugo pointed out “As long as the social restrictions caused by laws and customs still exist, the human society would be turned to be a hell and people will suffer from inevitable disasters. If we couldn’t get rid of the following three issues existing in this century——men are getting down because of poorness, women are turning to be degenerate because of starving, children are becoming weak and helpless because of pervasive darkness of the world”.
In the peace society,we live a quiet life.But in 19th century,the God made a fun of a goodness person who named Jean Valjean and gave him a miserable world and unfair destiny.Why such a good man had been relentlessly playing tricks on fate from God's punishment?Why even a man did a great deal of good deed but by once a wrong thing will never return to a good man?That’sall for the sake of the social contradictions.The story strongly tells us the fact that the tragedy people are suffering is exactly the tragedy of the whole society.
Jean Valjean born in a poor family and his father died in his childhood.Because of the stress of life,he stole a piece of bread and was put into prison for 19 years.Then,his prison term was extended for escaping from jail.After Jean Valjean escaping from prison,nobody was willing to help him even looked at him with strange eyes.He didn't even have a place to stay overnight and even a dogs was willing not to accept him.
When Valjean was in despair,a virtuous bishop took him in church.The old man won many people's respect and love with his kindness. I still remember what he said that this door does not ask the names of the men came in, but to ask him if he has pain. Do you have pain?If you are hungry and thirsty, here will be your home.Such a humane man!The bishop used his love to influence a convict who was just out of prison.He washed Valjean’s soul and reflected the mercy of people.From then on,Valjean decided to be honest and kindness and he did it.

Valjean experienced a number of setbacks in his life.Because of his criminal record,he was sometimes misunderstood by people. A police named Javert also didn’t forgive Valjean,but was moved by him.To error is human.Why people can not forgive Valjean like the virtuous bishop with kindliness?Could it be said that it is impossible to forgive a man who made mistakes?It’s unfair and unconscionable.
Jean Valjean did not give up hope of life for the fate of injustice.Because of bishop’s enlightenment,he improved himself and devoted himself to ueservedly help the poor.In Monterey, people affectionately call Valjean father Madeleine.As a mayor,hemade this poor cityprosperous.He treated others kindly,constructed lots of hospitals and schools and helped a host of poor people.Afterwards,Valjean was arrested and forced labor in a ship.Because he saved a sailor,he fell into the sea.And then later,he valiantly fighted in the bullets.He had no children,but he adopted an unfortunate girl who named Cosette.He carefully took good care of her as his own daughter.That’s Valjean’s life which was full of frustration.Corresponding wih the dark and ugly social phenomenon,that’s a heart so kind and selfless.In order to make some strangers don’t be hurt,Valjean should stand and walk again and again risk,even willing to pay a life of their owe.
Although Jean Valjean’s life was full of misfortune,he was tenacious enough toovercome all the difficulties that he faced.He is a great father,a charitable mayor and a brave hero!But a good heart may not earn good rewards. Finally,patheticJean Valjean passed away in the company of Cosette and Marius.He didn’t want to buried himself in the specified place, just aplot of land in casual and didn’t mark it.The man devoted his life to others, but didn’t want to be remembered by others.
After reading this novel, I was deeply moved.I thought that the class society was cruel to the poor and was mournful to the ordinary people.In order to against social injustice,they made great contribution and put their effort and passion into..What impressed me most was Jean Valjean’s kindness and tolerance.When Enjolras found out Javert and let Valjean kill him, but Valjean loosened him and let him go yet.I am very confused that the chase of Javert made Valjean scared for a long time but he didn’t seize this opportunity to get rid of the evil man.Till the end of the novel, Javert realized his fault and the chaotic society wasn’t the one he wanted to preserve.At that time,I understood what Valjean did.
