“你的信能改变我的命运。”这是一个中国学生对我说的话,她毕生的梦想就是去美国学习。我在2007年9月遇见了她,恰好是我来清华大学新闻与传播学院当客座教授的那一周。这个学生来参加我的午餐演讲会,我们彼此交谈了一些开心的事情。她随后用电子邮件给我发来一封问候信,并祝我中秋节快乐。大约一个月之后,她邀请我共进晚餐,就在清华大学海淀区校园附近的一个餐馆里,还送给我一包虾米,这是她从青岛附近的老家带来的。

我们在饭桌上谈了很多有关她的事情:她近期在电台的工作情况,她的gre学习情况,还有她要去美国深造的梦想。我注意到她神情焦虑。就在我们从餐馆来到星巴克咖啡店的时候,她很婉转地说到了推荐信的事。
