It’s a story about pirates. Most parts of this book are described by a boy. The boy and

paper was a treasure map. Later more pirates came to their inn and the strange man

was killed by them. The boy got the paper and gave it to a doctor he believed in. Then

they decided to seek the treasure by themselves. They asked more persons: Trelawney and a captain—Smollett, but also a cook. They began the trip, after they got to the

(≥50 words)

The part of this book that had the greatest impact on me is: the boy escaped from the stockade and got on the little boat left by the man lived on the island. He went to the big pirate ship in order to got back their ship. The water was fierce, and the little boat can hardly keep its balance. He went near to the ship and cut off the ropes. As there was no noice, he climbed in the ship and only found one man alive. Then he and the other man drived the ship back. I admire his brave and his intelligence.

3. Is the writing effective, powerful, difficult, or beautiful? (≥50 words)

The writing is powerful. It’s an attractive story, and when I was reading this book, my heart was always nervous, I was thinking what would happen later. While the plot became more and more intricate, I can even not put the book down. I wanted to know the coming things. Also the book gave a lot of encourage, they were in such a difficult circumstances, but they still found a way to overcome it. At last, they got the treasure and got back home.

4. What new facts did you learn that you hadn’t known before? (≥50 words)

What new facts I learnt that I hadn’t known before include two points. Once I thought that pirates are both very bad. They can kill everyone for the target—treasure. however I saw friendship between the boy and his friends. They fight together against the bad men and whoever got hurt they would be sorrowful. Second is that I know how to survive when I am left on an island alone. 5. If you could talk to the author, what would you say? (≥50 words)

If I could talk to the author, I would say: thanks for writing such an interesting book. It improves my interest in pirates and adventure. I am somehow encouraged by them. I am dreaming of experiencing such an adventure. Can you tell me more details about pirates and sailing. Also I hope more books about pirates would come out. 6. What did you learn about yourself as a result of reading this book or article? (≥50

words)

As a result of reading this book, I learn about myself that I am not brave and bright as the boy. If I meet such things, I would choose to escape.I will not seek the opportunity to survive myself. So when I meet something bad, I should find way to tackle it with

my mind. Also, I should believe in my friends. When I have trouble, they will surely help me out.

7. Note down three useful expressions you learned from your reading and make one

sentence for each expression.

1) [Useful expression] (p.3)How that person – the seaman with one leg – haunted my Dreams, I need scarcely tell you.

[Sentence you made]The idea – to do like a guider – haunted my mind, when we are doing our social practice.

2) [Useful expression] (p.71 )I assure you I was quite of Mr. Trelawney’s way of thinking, and hated the captain deeply. [Sentence you made] I assure you that all these things are done by me, and I was quite of all our benefits.

3) [Useful expression] (p.184)All the time he kept smiling, and putting his tongue outin the most shame – face manner, so that a child could have told that he was intending to play some trick on me.

[Sentence you made] I could tell that he was intending to cheat me, with his hands trembling and his feet moving.

8. General remarks: (≥200 words)

As a book about adventure, it is real a classical. It not only told us an exciting story, but also the spirits from the inn heart of the boy ,doctor and so on. When they got the paper, the established their goal and go on to achieve it in a minute. That’s how we should do. Always we establish a goal, but we waste our time, find excuse to do it later, and finally failed. Besides, when they know the people on the ship are pirates once and want to seek the treasure for themselves. After finding the treasure they

would all be killed. They take measures at once; use their brave and their intelligence to defeat the enemy. Jim Hawkins was a timid and shy boy at first. At the beginning of the voyage, Jim was only a waiter in the cabin. But he was able to fight with enemies, and recapture the ship from the enemys at last. Although he was always prone to became actuation. His courage and insight that had been represented make me admirable. I have learned many things from him, like brave, resource and so on. Novels praised poor, vagrants, orphans, on the noble, courageous and well-intentioned, who have expanded the evil, cowardly and insidious way to pay tribute to character and good people.

I.Introduction

Robert Louis Stevenson was a British novelist, poet, travel writer and essayist. He was born in Edinburgh Scotland in 1850. Since he was young he broken in health. When he grow old he had planned to inherit his father’s career as an engineer. But because of his illness, he changed his major into law. However, his interest was in the literature actually. In 1878 and 1879, he published two works about the journey one after another. And since then he never stopped his writing. In 1879, he went to United States and married Fanny Osborne who was ten years older than him. Stevenson still had the serious lung disease and this condition forced him to take his wife and his adapted son, Lloyd settling in California. The mild climate there was beneficial to his health undoubtedly. In 1880, he returned to Scotland. He began to design the story, Treasure Island for his son and later it was published in 1883. What’s more, this book was regarded as the best works of children’s adventure story. And Stevenson has also become a famous writer.Due to the health problem, he and his family had to move to the Pacific island. In 1894, Stevenson died suddenly. In the 19th century, England was famous for her seafaring and was remarked as the sea overlord. At that time, many people dreamed about finding treasure at sea.

Stevenson has been greatly admired by many authors, including Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling, Vladimir Nabokov and J. M. Barrie. His best-known books include Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. A literary celebrity during his lifetime, Stevenson now ranks among the 26 most translated authors in the world. The book, Treasure Island was translated into many languages and has been adapted for film, television for many times. It has very far-reaching impact.

II. The Story of the Book

Jim Hawkins was a ten year old boy. He lived in the inn named Admiral Benbow with his parents. One day, an old pirate, Flint came to the tavern. And the whole story began.

Flint was the leader of the pirates. He leaded them gathering manytreasures and they put the treasure on the Treasure Island. But only Flint knew the place exactly. And he recorded everything in his map. This map was locked in his chest and nobody had seen it. Flint’s followers were thirsty for the map that recorded the treasures’ place. So they kept finding Flint all the time and did everything possible to get the map. Eventually Jim got the map with the price that his family was broken. For getting the help from others, Jim gave DrLivesey, who was the magistrate of the town, the map. And there was another person who knew the accident. He was the squire Trelawney. Trelawney and DrLivesey decided to go to sea and find the treasure. After about one month, the squire employed one captain Smollett, one cook, Silver and many sailors. So they began their voyage soon. At the beginning, everything went very well except for the captain Smollett’s dissatisfaction. The captain thought that the squire didn’t arrange the job distribution well and the members on the board was not well known each other. The behavior that the captain did not mince matters caused the others’ abominate for him, especially the squire. But in the end, the squire listened the advice of the captain.

The cook, Silver, was kind to everyone and full of energy. Although he was a cripple, he could move as a normal person even better than a normal person. He had been the cook on the Flint’s boat. And he was very popular in the Hispaniola. But in fact, Silver was very cunning. One night, Jim jumped into the barrel to eating apples. By chance, he heard that Silver wanted to persuade the other sailors to join his plan, betraying the others. Later, Jim Hawkins succeeded in fleeing the barrel and told what he heard to the DrLivesey and the squire. This finding made them have the mental preparation for what would happen in the next.

When the Hispaniolaarrived at the Treasure Island, Jim tailed with other pirate land the island without the Silver’s permission. On the island he saw the conflict between Silver and the honest pirate and the massacre. Because of the horror, he was afraid to come back to the Hispaniola, so he kept going forward. And to his surprise he met a person who lived in the

Treasure Island for three years alone. The man called Ben Guna. After going through sufferings, Jim brought Ben back to his group. Later, Jim steered the coracle lonely, leaving the wounded captain and the other members. Luckily, he succeeded in finding the Hispaniola and steered her into the sand beach where was safe.

And then Jim came back to the block-house, where they hided themselves. But beyond his expectation, the block-house had been occupied by Silver. Then Jim was captured by them. The other pirates wanted to kill Jim except Silver. At last, Silver succeeded convince others to keep Jim alive. What’s more,Silverand Jim reached an agreement that Silver saved Jim’s life and Jim should give him a way to live if they came back to the Hispaniolasafely. Afterwards, they were lucky enough to escape the dangerous condition. But a leopard cannot change his spots. On the way they came back to home, Silver escaped with lots of treasure. But the other people all thought it’s better for him and themselves.

III. My Views on the Book

Treasure Island’s success relies not only on the plot but also the depiction of the characters. For example, in the very beginning the description to the captain, “his tarry pigtail falling over the shoulders of his soiled blue coat, his hands ragged and scarred, with black, broken nails; and the sabre cut across one cheek, a dirty, livid white.” This can easily lead people thinking of a murderous pirate.

Secondly, although this novel’s name was Treasure Island, what it wanted to pass on was not the gold and silver. What it really wanted to transmit was the love of the humanity and justice. Among the group of combative pirates, Jim was on the contrary. He was friendly to people and he could distinguish the good from the bad. His witty and brave was inspired in the conflict of the seizing treasures. Finally, they won the game. The opposite of Jim was Silver. He was also a distinctive character. And we can also say that he was a man with courage and plans. However, the way he chose was a way full of sins, so eventually he was cast aside by people.

Thirdly, we can feel the seduce of the money through reading this novel. The direness for money can change the attachment between people. It can cause the dog-eat-dog. But in reality, the money is innocent. What makes the money terrible is the human’s desires. In a word, we should treat money rationally. Only in this way can money become the most

useful items.
