James Lee: Lydia’s father. Professor in Middlewood University. He is a

Chinese American, whose parents were the first generation immigrated to America. Growing up in a “racial discrimination” environment and always being totally different with everyone, he always tries to blend inthem and be the same with them.Maybe that’s why he chose to marry Marilyn. This makes him coward and self-abased. He never faces the reality, on contrary, he always escapes from it.

Marilyn: Lydia’s mother.A housewife. She is a white woman, growing up in a single parent family. Unlike James, she wants to be different all the time. And that is partly why she fights against gender inequality and fell in love with James. Because she didn’trealize her own dream, she pushes her wishes on her little daughter, Lydia, and gives her much pressure. She is very controlling and adventurous.

Causes of death:

Family influence(life experience)

1957

James, the academically gifted child of Chinese immigrants spent his entire life yearning to belong and went on to become a university professor, where he met Marilyn in 1957 in a class he was teaching on American culture at Harvard. Meanwhile, Marilyn grew up disgusted by her homemaker mother and longed to become a doctor. When she met James and recognized the racist treatment he had been receiving, Marilyn immediately felt a kinship with him and the two began an affair. Discovering she was pregnant, she arranged for a quick marriage to James and was disgusted when her mother tried to stop the wedding after seeing that James was of Asian descent.

? Influence on Lydia:James always wants to be the same with others and Marilyn always wants to be different. That’s why they choose

each other as their partner. The environment where both of them grow up makes them the same kind of person, who doesn’t know how to communicate with and express love to each other . Therefore, they love Lydia but they expressed their love in a wrong way. They forced Lydia to obey their willing. James, Lydia’s father, cannot blend into the white, therefore, he kept putting force on Lydia’s interpersonal skills, urge Lydia to blend in the white community which made Lydia stressful. Marilyn, Lydia’s mother, felt regretful stopping pursuit her dream to become a woman doctor, so she hoped that Lydia could continue her dream and become an excellent doctor, which brought greater pressure on Lydia. They both cannot set a good example for Lydia, they cannot teach Lydia how to love and be lovable. Growing up in such a family environment, Lydiaalways got confused and miserable.1966

Marilyn intended to go back and continue her studies to become a doctor after her son, Nathan, was born, but after a second pregnancy with Lydia she remained a home-maker for eight years. After receiving news of her estranged mother's death, Marilyn returned to her childhood home to deal with her mother's things and had a crisis after realizing that she achieved the home-maker life her mother always desired for her. After briefly returning home, she abandons the family in

order to pursue her academic studies without leaving a note. James believes that she has left because he and the children are Asian and she no longer wants to deal with the societal pressure of being outsiders. Influence on Lydia:Marilyn’s missing changes Lydia’s characters. During the period of Marilyn’s missing, Lydia became extremely sensitive and she eagerly wanted her mother back. That was when she decided that she would do anything Marilyn wanted her to do. Every time her mother asked, she said yes, yes, yes.

1966, summer

Marilyn's absence lasts nine weeks, during which she realizes she is pregnant with a third child, Hannah. She returns home and realizes she will never have the will to abandon her children and pursue a career again. Instead she begins to encourage Lydia to become a doctor, aggressively training her in math and other sciences. During Marilyn's absence, James also began favoring Lydia and bullying Nath, whom James perceives is as friendless as James was in childhood. Nath becomes jealous of Lydia and one day pushes her into the lake even though she cannot swim. However, the ease with which she falls causes Nath to realize that Lydia is drowning under the weight of her parents expectations. He rescues her and the two become close.

Influence on Lydia: 1. Marilyn pushes her wishes on Lydia and gave her much pressure after she is back. Lydia just does what she promised

Everything I Never Told You
